I have spent much of the past several weekends working on my master bedroom closet.
I already have an organizer system in my closet, but wanted to pretty it up a bit.
I started by painting the walls the same color as the tray ceiling in the master bedroom.
I thought this would take no time at all. It ended up taking me over three hours since the organizer was already in the closet and I had to cut in what felt like a million times.
While the closet was empty, I went through each and every item and edited what would go back into the closet. This is really an important step in organizing your closet.
After loading five bags of clothing to give away, and reorganizing everything that went back in,
here is my new and improved closet:
A few weeks ago I started this makeover by removing my closet doors and adding drapes instead.
It totally opened up the inside of the closet.
I added decorative boxes on the top shelf to hold all of my handbags and other infrequently used items.
I created labels for the boxes using my Silhouette machine.
On each label I wrote down the contents of each box.
This way I can tell at a glance what is inside.
I also added a damask stencil to the closet.
I used my Silhouette machine to cut out two different sizes
of the damask pattern out of brown adhesive vinyl.
While I was at it, I created a sign for over the door inside the closet also out of the brown vinyl.
The damask on either side of the sign is the negative side of the vinyl cutouts.
I mixed a few elements on the Silhouette machine to make the scroll design.
I think there are several key elements to having a well organized closet
that is both functional and pleasing to the eye.
1. Have all the same hangers. This may seem like it's not a big deal,
but you would be surprised at just how much better your
closet will look and function.
2. Organize your clothing by type and color
Having your clothing organized by type and color makes putting together outfits much easier.
3. Organize your closet by season. Right now I have all of my winter clothing up front and visible.
4. Store less used items in decorative boxes at the top of your closet
so as not to take up valuable "real estate".
So what do you think?
I can't wait to hear.

I'm so jealous! The closet looks gorgeous! Love that stencil and how organized you are!
ReplyDeleteThat looks so orderly! It's a good way to start the day! I agree about the hangers....

Looks great, Judy! I probably reorganize my closet 4 times a year... purge, color coordinate, etc. Yet, it is still the messiest room in the house. I've been thinking I need to "prettify" it like you did. That might motivate me to keep it neat. Love your pretty boxes and labels!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful job! I found your closet through A Glimpse Inside's link party. I love your color scheme. ~ Megan ( your newest linky follower)
ReplyDeleteIt looks Perfect! It's a bigger job than you think. I get started and then get distracted by ANYTHING... You did a great job. XO Cindy
ReplyDeleteNice job! I like the stencils.
ReplyDeleteJudy- looks fantastic! You have inspired me. Where did you get some of the boxes on your shelves?
ReplyDeleteJudy,
ReplyDeleteit looks marvelous every detail so lovingly achieved.
The storage boxes are delightful.
I can't believe how organised you are.
Please don't look in my closet!
Maggie
Love the look of your closet...now if only I had the patience to do the same...
ReplyDeleteLove the "Judy's Closet"!! Enjoy! Janell
ReplyDeleteWhere you have "Judy's Closet" for yours, mine would have my husband's name, Judy! He has just taken over the place! I love the use of boxes. I have to do that, as well as go through the stuff we just basically stuffed up on top to get out of our way when we moved in. Labeling would be a must. Love the damask stencil you added, too. It all looks so neat and organized. You've inspired me to start thinking about getting down to mine. Although, I do need my hubby to go through his clothes again. I got rid of one bag of his clothes this week, but I know there's more that can go!
ReplyDeleteJudy -- it is FABULOUS!! That would inspire me in a huge way :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Gail
Love the curtain!

ReplyDeleteI say in one word, NEAT as in how it truly is and just how fantastic it all is!
ReplyDeleteI almost didn't click on this link because just this morning I was thinking about how I really need to do something about my closet.
ReplyDeleteIt's simply lovely! Now I am inspired...
Oh, I would love for my closet to look like that! I need to follow your advice and remove everything in order to organize. I usually work on a little section, get frustrated or indecisive, plan to go back later to finish...and then I never do! Yours looks beautiful and I love the decorative boxes and stencil!

I'd have to say that it pretty much rocks!
ReplyDelete=)
Jealous, that is all I can say, again..Jealous! It is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteNicely done. I always buy the organizer things because I have good intentions. But I also have ADD and so the organizer things just become one more thing to put away...so I admire your beautiful closet!
ReplyDeleteWow Judy, that looks fabulous!! You really like purple and plums, ha! (Me too!) I also love that you labeled your closet- what a great idea! I think I'm getting inspired... :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks so incredible Judy!! I absolutely love all of the beautiful decorative touches and the stenciling adds so much. Makes me want to go do a big ol' overhaul of our closet. :-) Thanks so much for sharing it at Inspiration Friday!

A dream for anyone. Awesome.
ReplyDeleteI love it! It looks pretty & it's so organized. I wish my closets were big enough to organize this way.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness! Your closets look better than my bedroom!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely job!
I never though about matching hangers, but that's a good idea. I love the boxes - I should do that with my shoes - that would make them last longer! Going through your clothes and giving away items is a hard thing to do. Good for you! {:-Deb
ReplyDeleteBeautiful job I like the boxes very much they are pretty.
ReplyDeleteStopping over from DebbieDoos to say thanks for giving us a home tour.
ReplyDeleteYour whole house is beautiful and while I was admiring all the details I picked my favorites....
The board and batten in the mudroom
Your daughters room
Pillows on your son's bed
And of course the pizza oven!

Wow! What a good-looking closet. I know that mine could function much better than it does. Your post is inspirational!
ReplyDeleteYour closet looks amazing! I love all of the attention to details. Painting does make quite a difference, closets are often what we ignore here. I am inspired, thanks for sharing. I am going to start looking for boxes for my orgainization plan.
ReplyDeleteI'm working on my closet too thanks for the tips your closet looks lovely
ReplyDeleteThe closet is gorgeous! You have really paid attention to detail! You have me thinking of taking off my closet door and adding a curtain...it looks so elegant and I am sure it opens the space up! Found you from Stuff and Nonsense. Now following you via LF!

Beautiful closet Judy- and so organized- love it!! Thanks for linking up at Feathered Nest Friday!
ReplyDeleteWOW Judy want to come help me with mine:) LOVE IT!!
ReplyDeleteWow Judy great job. It's so nice to be organized. I don't have walk in closets :( but there big I do have some shelving on one side but would like to put nice wood ones in I seen at Lowe/ Home depot/ oe Costco. My son wants them in his closets as well. Labels or boxes with sleeves to put label in is the answer. Only thing not my style is the curtain for doors. But I'm a modernist. It's about what you love.
ReplyDeleteJudy, we just moved and I could soooo use your talents!
ReplyDeleteEverywhere I look around here could stand to be "Judy-fied!"
Thanks for another nifty link for the letter "N".
A+
This looks so amazing, Judy! We have a 9x10 closet that the hubs & I share, but we still haven't decided just what we want to do to it to make it much more efficient. Right now there is so much untapped potential. I really love what you have done. I missed this post initially, but found it when I was looking at the transformation (or maybe I should say "magic") you did on your husband's closet. I hope you don't mind, I'm totally "pinning" your closet makeovers!
ReplyDeleteCAS
That's a nice closet. I have to do mine, too. I wish I had a Silhouette so I could make those beautiful stickers, too!!!
ReplyDeleteJule
Judy,
ReplyDeleteFirst time to your blog! I love it! Great job on the closets. They looks great! My hubby and I have similar size closets. Would you mind telling me the dimensions of your closets. I think I may be able to something like what you did to mine.
