Pierre Deux Inspired Mirror

While flipping through one of my favorite catalogs, Pierre Deux, I came across this beautiful mirror.

It's a hand painted mirror that I thought would be beautiful in the bathroom I am redecorating in my downstairs.
So far I've changed the cabinet from blah to beautiful using Anne Sloan chalk paint.  Now for a mirror...

I had a mirror in a closet that wasn't being used that was the perfect size.  I started by taping off the glass.

I painted the mirror with Anne Sloan Chalk Paint in old white.   I had some trouble getting into all of the spaced around the raised dots on the mirror.  I grabbed a can of Heirloom White spray paint and painted around the trim.  BTW it is essentially the same color as the old white.  I couldn't tell where I sprayed and where I had painted.
After the white paint was dry, I used a portion of a stencil to create my hand painted design.

I started in one corner with my stencil.  I used Duck Egg for the stencil.

After finishing the first side I realized that it would have been much smarter of me to start in the middle and then work my way to the sides.  So for the remaining three sides that's what I did.
I dipped the end of my brush into the duck egg to paint the raised dots.
After I was done with the stenciling, I used a clear wax and then a dark wax to add some character.
So here it is in the bathroom.  It's only leaning for now since I still have to paint the bathroom.
The other reason it's not hung on the wall is...I'm not sure I actually love it?  Problem #1 is until I get that paint color changed on the wall I don't think I'm going to like anything.  Problem #2...my goal was to create a french looking mirror...did I achieve that or does it look southwestern???
Problem #3 - I have to address the poor lighting in that bathroom!! Ok, that will be for another day.

So I ask you...is this a hit or miss??

  1. I really like this. I can see though how you might think it looks a bit southwestern. Maybe if the stenciled pieces touched and made a more continuous pattern it would look more french? Either way, I think it's gorgeous!

  2. A hit for sure!! It has a very similar look to your inspiration mirror and it's so pretty! I love that you tied it in with your cabinet by using the same color for the stencil. To me it doesn't look Southwestern at all. I think once you change your wall color and fix the lighting you'll love it. Great job!!

  4. I think you should wait until you paint the walls before making any final decision on it, Judy. The wall color may make all the difference in how it looks against the wall.

  5. Definitely French and not a bit Southwestern.

Sheesh. How must it be to be able to just look in a magazine and make it happen?!

I think once you have the walls painted, you will like this much better. It just needs to have a color that make sit pop.

    =)

  7. A hit! Definitely not Southwestern. And it will look amazing once you get your bathroom painted and everything in place.

  8. I think it turned out great! I'd wait until you paint the room to make any decisions regarding the mirror. It may just be the wall color that has you doubting it.

Let me know if you got my e-mail last week. It was a big attachment, and e-mails with attachments often end up in my spam box.

  9. Well I think you did a great job and it looks fantastic but I agree with everyone else that you won't really know until you get the other pieces of the "puzzle" put together. Either way you will make it all look gorgeous! :-)

  12. Based on the reaction from my 8-year-old daughter, I'd say it's a hit! She was oohing and ahhing over everything - I love that you used the cabinet color as the accent...don't make any changes until the bathroom is painted...it's so tough to judge a new piece when all that's coordinating are a cabinet & mirror, ya know? :)

  15. It looks GREAT. That green cabinet is to.die.for!! I've been looking for Heirloom White and couldn't find it at Lowe's or Wal-Mart. Where did you find yours?

Also, I'm starting a Linky party on Mondays called "Make a List Mondays". I would love it if you could join! If you miss Mondays, just come on over early in the week. :)
