My Daughter's New Tween Room - The Reveal

It's been a whirlwind the last few days.  But I was able to carve out a few hours to at least have a partial reveal of my daughter's new tween room.  Her room was already beautiful before as I had only done a mini-makeover on the room nine months ago.  However, when I did that mini-makeover it was with the agreement that as soon as she was ready for a full size bed, we would update the makeover.  I banked on getting two years out of the mini-makeover on the room.  I didn't take into account the changes that Middle School causes, which escalated the timeline.
So without further ado, I present her new tween room:

Like I said, we were busy all weekend so I haven't had anytime to finalize artwork etc for the walls.

This was her room before in all it's shabby chic loveliness.  I loved her room and felt that I had finally found the perfect furniture arrangement.  The daybed was practical for years giving her tons of floorspace.   However, she really wanted a full size bed along with more of a tween look (or at least in her mind what a tween room should look like).  That meant brightening up three of the walls, ripping up the carpet to expose the hardwood floors and adding an area rug.
The bedding is from PB Teen and the bolster pillow I had from her daybed.
I had made her the bolster cover and stenciled her name using a silver sharpie.  The colors no longer went with her new room.  I really didn't feel like making a bolster cover from scratch, so instead...
I used Martha Stewart paint in the color pool, mixed it with her fabric medium, and painted right over the grey.  I then used fabric glue and glued teal ribbon over the grey ribbon.
In no time I had a bolster pillow that worked with the new room colors.
The other thing that didn't match was her jewelry box.  I painted it over using Benjamin Moore Surf City (the sample of paint I had from the color we did not use for the walls).
Now it coordinates perfectly.
I will be working on the artwork this week...hopefully.

Let me know what you think so far.  I'll share all sources with you tomorrow.

I think it looks absolutely adorable...err...cool...err...pretty? What is the right term for a tween room? LOL! Truly though, Judy, you did such a great job working with and updating her existing pieces and what you did with the bolster pillow was genius. :-) Love the new bedding and wall color too!

It turned out beautifully, Judy! I know about the artwork, I'm still working on that part in the guest bedroom. Since my son won't really care I only picked up two pieces for now. I also have to figure out if I'm going to get a headboard or just do something else on that bed wall. I wondered if you redid the bolster! Great idea to just paint over it. Especially after the hard work you put into it originally. More grown up looking ~ this may get you through to college! : )

She must be really pleased. I wonder if she realizes that not all moms are like you in the decorating realm.

Probably not. Mine always used to think every mom was a writer and poet.

We just did this for my god-daughter (entered grade 7 last September). Teaching in a middle school for the past 10 years I knew it was coming but somehow it still caught us by surprise :-)

Judy, wow!! It looks great. Can I move in? lol She must love it. I've been thinking of getting some new things for stepdaughter's room for Christamas. We have no clue what to get her, but a room update is always a good gift, anytime of year. =)

The room was so pretty before and it's pretty now. It looks more mature but still soft and feminine. I love the bedding and the bolster remake was brilliant.

So, so pretty and sophisticated in a vintage sort of way! lol Are those the right words for a tween room?! I have a tween too, so I totally understand. You did an amazing job and it's a room she'll be happy with for years!
