Navy and Beige Master Bedroom

A little over a year ago we bought a second home in Florida.  My daughter is a highly ranked national tennis player and often trains in Florida.  As we spent more and more time in Florida, it made sense to buy a second home there.  We are in Florida for the next two weeks so I thought I would do a tour of this home.  What better place to start than the master bedroom.

We bought new construction in a gated community.  Timing is everything and this home was partially furnished by the builder since they were finishing up the development and wanted to sell quickly.  The color scheme of this room was dictated by the custom drapes and pictures picked out by the builder's decorator.  

I chose the bedding.  I love this navy and beige bedding from Pottery Barn.  It's not too masculine or feminine.  The toss pillows on the bed are from Marshall's.  The bedside lamps are from Target.  

The chair was a find from Home Goods.  Home Goods has become my home away from home over the past year.  The toss pillow is from Target.

The floor lamp is also from Target and completes this side of the room.

The feel and tone of this home is different, as it should be, from our New York home.  The furniture is much less traditional and more transitional.  I've been having fun decorating in a totally different style.  Make sure to stop back as I will be showing off the rest of the home in the coming days.

Master Bedroom Retreat - A New Addition

A few years ago we were on vacation and we were staying in a beautiful hotel.  The linens were high end and the bedding luxurious and elegant.  That was when I decided to take our master bedroom to another level.  I asked myself why shouldn't we enjoy that type of luxury on a nightly basis.

Welcome!  Piece by piece I put it together.  Now all of the essentials are in our master bedroom retreat...

...luxurious bedding, a bench at the end of the bed, a comfy chair to read or watch television.

But there has been something missing.  Something that most luxury hotel rooms have...

A writing desk.  I have wanted a writing desk in our master bedroom for a long while.  I have pictured myself writing correspondence or blogging late at night at a beautiful desk.

 I picked this up last week at the liquidation sale our local Ethan Allen was having.  I had told the salesgirl weeks ago that I was interested in this desk and as soon as they opened the sale to the public to please let me know.  She called me as soon as she got the news that the sale to the public would begin and I purchased it over the phone and was there to bring it home within an hour.

I love the legs on this desk.  I have wanted this desk for sometime now.  For a while we had two chairs in our room so there just wasn't any space for a desk.  At one point I even considered buying the desk for my daughter's room just to have it in the house, but it didn't have enough storage for a student's desk, so I couldn't justify the purchase.  About a month ago I moved one of the chairs from our bedroom to my son's teen lounge off his bedroom where it is getting plenty of use.  Timing is everything and this desk becoming available at a discount when the space opened up in our room made this all possible.  I had the chair already but was using it in my guest room at my sewing machine.  It's makeover was one of the first I blogged about several years ago.

The desk also compliments the piece I have right outside of our bedroom, which is from Ethan Allen as well.

I can't wait to hear what you think of my new desk.

Master Bedroom - Partial Reveal

One of my best friends is in the process of doing a master bedroom makeover.  Since she is not a blogger, she did not take before photos (remember before blogging when taking before photos was something that never crossed your mind).  Even without the before photos, I was so in love with the progress she has made in the room, that I just had to share it with you.

The room before had dark walls and the bedding and the drapes was gold and burgundy.  

My friend's inspiration for the whole room was this piece.  She bought it a while back and has been planning the room around it ever since.  

The bed also used to be on the wall to the right of the photo above.  What a difference now...the room looks huge.  All of the furniture was moved as well.

This dresser was where the bed is currently located.

This armoire is going to be leaving the room.  They also did a fabulous closet makeover (I am making her send me those before photos before I share it), so the armoire is no longer necessary.  It is probably going into their son's room.  This area is going to become a sitting area.

I love the new color scheme.  The lamps were an awesome find from Home Goods.

The duvet is from West Elm.  It was my friend's husband who suggested the pop of color on the bed...LOVE IT!!

They still have window treatments, an area rug, and a seating area to go...but it's super beautiful so far.

It's amazing how different the room looks just from a new paint color and rearranging the furniture.  If your bedroom seems stale, try moving the furniture around.  

You may be amazed with the difference it makes.

How to Make a King Size Pillow Sham

A few weeks ago I purchased this beautiful duvet cover from Pottery Barn.

Unfortunately, Pottery Barn does not sell king size pillow shams in this pattern.  Actually, I don't think they sell king size pillow shams in the majority of their bedding.

That was okay...I had a plan.  When I bought the duvet cover I remembered seeing a shower curtain in the same pattern.  I went back to the store the next day and the shower curtain was gone.  Ugh!  I called all of the Pottery Barn stores near me and none of them had the shower curtain and weren't sure when they would get them in.  So instead I checked out ebay and bought a new in package shower curtain, in the pattern I needed.  As a bonus, it actually cost me less than it would have in the store 

and arrived in only a few days.  

My king size pillow inserts measure 36" x 20".  In order to make a pillow sham with a 3" flange, I added 3 inches plus 1 inch for seam allowance making the total measurement of the front of each pillow 40" x 24" (36 + 3 + 1=40 and 20 + 3 + 1 = 24)

Shower curtains typically measure 72" x 72".  Because I would be cutting three widths of 24" I measured the shower curtain, just to make sure it really measured 72".  Well it didn't...so I had to adjust my 24" measurement so that all of the pieces I would cut would be equal (always measure twice, cut once).  For the back of each pillow I cut two pieces of fabric - one measuring 32" x 24" and one measuring 16" x 32".  Since I was making two shams I cut two of everything.

With right sides together I placed one front and the two back pieces together and then sewed around all four sides.  I was strategic in how I cut the fabric and used the hemmed edges for the back envelope section.  It saved one step in my sewing.

Then I turned the pillow right side out and ironed all of the edges flat.  Then I used a square and drew a light pencil line on the back side of pillow for the two inch flange all around (now my plan was to make a three inch flange, but once I had to reduce the sides because the shower curtain didn't really measure 72", the flange had to shrink a bit as well).  

That was it...once I got all of the measurements straight, the actual sewing took no time at all.

These new pillow shams complete the look of our bed.

These pillow shams also cost about half of what it would have cost me to buy either the euro sham or standard sham that Pottery Barn does sell.  I have a little bit of fabric left too and I'm sure I'll figure out something to use it on.

Master Bedroom Duvet

Last week the Pottery Barn Bed and Bath catalog arrived in my mailbox.  I don't know about you, but I actually get a little excited when a new PB catalog arrives.  I really enjoy flipping through the pages.  The front cover of the latest issue of the Bed and Bath catalog had new bedding featured.

When I saw the new "Charlie Paisley Duvet" I thought...hmmm...this would look really beautiful in my master bedroom.  I wanted to see it in person, because sometimes the colors appear much different from the photograph.  So I went to my local PB, which generally carries a small selection of bedding (we have a larger PB further away that carries everything, but I thought I would start with the shorter drive).  As luck would have it they had this duvet in stock.  It was even more perfect in person.

The blue in the duvet in person was more like the robin's egg blue in my bedroom, not as blue-grey as many of the PB duvets (or as blue/grey as it looked in the photo).   

I was thrilled when I put it on the bed.   I think it adds so much to my master bedroom.

Here is my bedroom before.  We had a cream textured duvet and then the beige throw on the end of the bed.  I have been wanted to bring a bit more of the robin's egg blue into the bedroom for a while and have been keeping my eye open for something.  This new PB duvet works so well.

Now that I know the duvet is staying, I have to finish off the look.

Unfortunately, PB only sells standard and euro shams in this pattern.  I have two king size shams.  But I have a plan.  I noticed while at PB they sell a shower curtain in the same fabric.  I have to feel it, but my guess is that it is made from the same material.  If so, I will be sewing my own shams.  

I will be sure to share how I do it if I go this route.

I need to bring a little more color to the head of the bed and I'm thinking the shams being placed closest to the headboard will achieve this.  Also, the cream textured duvet that we had on the bed is now being used as a coverlet.  It's a very heavy weight fabric and actually looks and feels like a coverlet.
