My Daughter's Room - The Big Reveal - Repost

I hope you have enjoyed all of the guest posts this week.  A big thank you to all of my blog friends who came to my rescue while I was away.  I thought I would end the vacation week with reposting one of my most viewed posts...the makeover on my daughter's room.  I thought it would be fun to "re-air" this one.

As you know I have been working on redoing my ten year old daughter's room for some time now.  I have tried every furniture configuration you can imagine (thanks to those handy gliding furniture movers).  I think I have the best layout to maximize space in her space challenged room.  I think I have also made it a pretty, calming space for my ten year old taking into account the colors she wanted (it all started with her wanting a room with aqua in it) and that she wanted to keep her daybed.  Here is the final reveal.

Much of what you see I made in her room.

That beautiful chandelier is a Schonbek we purchased for her a few years ago.

The bedskirt and the euro shams were easy projects.  You can find out how I did these here and here.  For now I flipped her quilt over to the striped side.  The other side seemed to be too busy for the new pillows and bedskirt.  For now I think it works.  The lamp on the left is from Home Goods and the lamp on the right (on her desk) is from Target for the base (shabby chic) and Pottery Barn Kids for the lampshade.
The drapes are from Target's shabby chic line and were very reasonably priced.  The curtain rod is from pottery barn kids.  You can see a closeup of the rod and how to hang drapes like this here.

The pink wall was stenciled by me.  That wall alone took almost five hours.  Click here to see how I achieved the look of wallpaper with a stencil.  The memo board was made by me.  Click here to see how I made it.  Super fast and easy project for less than $20.  The desk and chair I found up in my attic.  I moved the desk next to her bed and it really opened up her room.  Using fabric I already had I recovered that chair.  Click here to see how I transformed the chair.

Ultimately this desk got moved next to her bed as seen in the pictures at the top of the post.

The word art I made as well.  The flowers and hearts on the word art were made using paint samples from Lowes.  You can check out how to make the word art here.  The vines and birds are decals from Home Goods.

I replaced the formica furniture she had (which was a hand me down from when we were first married) with a find I got at the Ethan Allen annual warehouse sale.  I got the armoire for 40% off the regular price.   It's a perfect fit for her room.  I got humpty dumpty to come off the wall...my daughter wasn't willing to completely get rid of him...so for now he will sit on top of the armoire.

The banner behind her door was made by me a few years ago.  I totally copied the idea from a banner than posh tots sells.  I just did it for a fraction of the price.  The little heart table with the dolls on it was painted by me as well.  I got it at AC Moore when I was pregnant with my daughter.  The "S" door hanging was also homemade by me.  You can check out here how I made it.

up close picture of table...I stenciled her first and middle name on each leg

This is her wall of closets.  Makes it tough for furniture arranging when one entire wall has closets.  Also, I would love to remove the bypass doors and replace them with french doors.  The downside to that is that the doors would then open up into her room...using up even more space in her space challenged room.

The birds and flowers on the doors are decals from Home Goods.

The mirror you see is from Home Goods.  I didn't mind putting her beautiful armoire behind the door since you can see its reflection when you walk into the room in this mirror.  This mirror is huge and heavy.  It was only $39.99 at Home Goods! (I still think it had to be mis-marked - Home Goods was selling the same brand mirror in half the size for twice the price).    The little side table is from Target's shabby chic line.  The lamp shade was embellished by me.  You can check that out here.
The chair in her room didn't start looking like that.
It started out looking like this.

The chair was reupholstered to look like this.  Pretty amazing, right?

The "dream" and "imagine" are also decals from Home Goods costing $9.99 (the rest of the decal was used on the other side of the room near the memo board).

The picture I already had in the house (technically it was under a bed waiting to reappear somewhere in the house).  It seems to go well with the soft feel of her room.

Her door sign started as a heart shaped piece of wood bought from AC Moore.  I decoupaged scrapbook paper on it, painted letters and used my hot glue gun to attach them.  I then used industrial strength sticky back velcro to attach it to the door (I used regular strength first and it fell off the door within two weeks-too heavy I guess).

Here's the before and after:
Before

I think I am done...or at least for the moment.  Let me know what you think of her room now.  I'd love your feedback.

See you all on Monday...I will be very jet lagged but hopefully will have lots of great photos

Guest Post - At The Picket Fence

I'd like to welcome Heather and Vanessa from At The Picket Fence.  They are sisters that blog together and they are simply the best.  I'm so honored that they agreed to do a guest post while I am away.  I know you'll love them as much as I do.

We are so excited to be hanging out over here today at DIY by Design! When Judy invited us gals At The Picket Fence to guest post for her while she's on her lovely European Vacation and Cruise (and not we are not jealous. not at all. not one tiny bit. nope) we were so honored!  Vanessa has been following Judy's beautiful blog from almost the beginning of it's conception and Heather jumped on board when Vanessa said, "You have got to go see my bloggy friend (that's what we like to call y'all) Judy's FABULOUS blog!" I was hooked! So, thank you Judy for inviting us to be a part of DIY by Design this week!

We all know Drop Cloths are all the rage in blogland. We have seen so many fabulous things sewn out of these humble pieces of cloth.  But I don't sew. Not one bit. I hang my head in shame in the presence of Judy and Vanessa. I wanted to come up with a unique way to use a drop cloth that didn't involve sewing.

Have you ever had one of those projects that you have created in your mind and you just hope it comes out like you imagine it?  Well this was one of those.  Letters seem to be all of the rage these days.  I have seen so many projects using them that I just love!  I knew I wanted to use them to spell out something fun as a piece of art in my new kitchen remodel.

I started out with purchasing some nice large ones and some pretty paper at Hobby Lobby. I was able to get the letters and the paper for half off…which is always great!

I just loved the colors of the scrapbook papers I found and thought that it would be fun to decoupage the letters instead of painting them…messy…but fun! First lay your letter on the wrong side of the paper and trace around it leaving a nice large margin so you can fold the paper over the edges of the letter.  Use a ruler on your straight edges.

and free hand your margin around corners

Next using mod podge decoupage your paper unto your letter.  I had to make small cuts to the parts of the paper wrapping around curves.  I also occasionally ended up with part of the wood showing through and had to glue on small scraps of paper to cover those areas up.

When I had completely adhered the paper to the letter, I completely covered the front of the letters in mod podge to seal it and give it a nice protective coating.

I loved how they turned out but I wanted to do something a little different than just attach them to the wall.

That is when I had the idea to utilize some other fun elements.  I think art that incorporates different mediums is really interesting and I was excited to try something unique and different.
I dug up a piece of wood left over from our window seat project that I knew was the perfect size for what I wanted to make.  Next, I washed one of my drop cloths and cut off a large section.
DSC_0255_edited-1
Then using my staple gun I attached the drop cloth around the entire length and width of the board pulling it tight as I went.

After I had completely attached the drop cloth remnant to the board, I was ready to add my next element

What is it you ask?  You are asking aren’t you? It’s galvanized metal roof flashing.  I know not quite what you were expecting…but stay with me.  The flashing comes in a 10” X 10’ section and it rolls out nicely when you attach it to the board. I measured the length I needed and using tin snips carefully cut off the excess
DSC_0261_edited-1
Then using small galvanized nails I centered the flashing on the board and nailed down each corner
DSC_0262_edited-1
Here you can see exactly how large the complete board is and it’s a blank slate waiting to be filled!  Can you envision my project with me now?  To finish up the project I attached picture hangers to the back of my board (it is very heavy) and glued magnets to the back of each letter and then hung it in the perfect spot
DSC_0293
What do you think?  I just L.O.V.E. it! I really like the soft colors which match my new color scheme in my kitchen perfectly.
DSC_0288
Of course my favorite part is what it spells out…
DSC_0279_edited-1
But you know what makes this project super duper extra cool?  I can change the letters out! By holiday, season, or event!  I am already picturing the word LOVE for Valentine’s Day, or NOEL for Christmas!  What about LIBERTY for the 4th of July or Bama Boy’s favorite idea…ROLL TIDE! The options are endless and I am pretty sure you’ll be seeing this project again with some of these ideas so stay tuned!

Sizzle into Summer - Party #22

Welcome to this week's Sizzle into Summer.  I'm still away on a European vacation with my family, but there's no reason the partying can't continue.  If you don't see any features that means I wasn't able to access wifi from the ship.  I will do a double-feature next week.  Now on to the party...

A few rules:
1.  Please become a follower.

2.  Please grab my party button above and display it either on your sidebar or somewhere in your post.  This way word can spread about the party.  The more people at the party, the more fun we will have.

3.  Please enter the link to your actual post, not just a link to your main blog page.

4. Please visit others who have linked up.   Everyone works hard on their projects and blogs...let's show each other some love by visiting each other.  Let's have some fun and hopefully make a few new friends along the way.

Ok...Let's Party

Guest Post - A Stroll Thru Life

Today I have Marty from A Stroll Thru Life as my guest poster.   Marty has a beautiful home and is the best at creating vignettes.  I discovered Marty's blog during the first week of blogging and she is on my daily check list.  I know you'll enjoy her blog.  Here's just a sample:

My name is Marty from A Stroll Thru Life and I am so happy to be doing a guest post for Judy while she enjoys a little vacation time.  Today I am going to show you some of the latest changes I've made in my home.

When I changed out the breakfast room and dining room chairs, the Living/Dining area changed so much I pulled out my favorite decor books by Charles Faudree and started hunting for inspiration.  The chairs seemed to change the feel of the room, a little more country french with the farmhouse table and ladderback chairs.
The height of these chairs seemed to make the dining table apprear much darker, so I was hunting for some kind of inspiration to lighten and brighten things up.  Charles uses a lot of gorgeous silk plaids in his decor.
I had just the right fabric in my stash that I had gotten to make sofa pillows and then only made one, so I had plenty to make a new table runner out of, and I had some remnant fringe too.  The fabric is a beautiful silk taffeta in a wonderful combination of yellow/orange and green.
The colors are just perfect to go with all my sofa pillows.
With the height of the chairs, my floral arrangement also needed to be taller.
I did it in this brown planter, but it wasn't very tall.  Something to elevate it on.
I had this brown metal planter, but it didn't elevate it enough, so what to do.
I turned it over and it was the right height.
I just sat the original planter on top and it was perfect.  I love to improvise and this is definitely a case in point.
Now it has the presence that it needed to have.  I love it when something works out that way.
I wanted a lighter look for the living room also, so I removed the area rug.  I think the room looks bigger without it.  Just one big expanse of carpet.  I love the look of layered rugs, however I was beginning to think the area rug drew your eye to the seating area, and didn't allow you to visually see the entire room.  Not a good thing in such a small area.
Small changes, but they do make an impact.  Try to take a really critical look at your rooms and figure out if there is something you can improve with just some really small changes, and the best part is mine were free.  Fabric and fringe I already had.
Thanks Judy for allowing me to step in for you.  I would also like to invite you all to visit me at my blog - A Stroll Thru Life and to join me for my weekly party called Table Top Tuesdays.

Guest Post - House of Turquoise

I'd like to introduce all of you to my blog friend, Erin, from House of Turquoise.  Whether it's aqua, turquoise or blue her blog has it.  She shares incredible, inspiring rooms everyday.

I'm thrilled to be guest posting here on DIY by Design! I'm such a fan of this blog...just cannot get over how talented Judy is! Her daughter's bedroom is one of my favorites! (And not just because the walls are the prettiest shade of aqua!) For those of you who don't know, I am totally obsessed with that color, well any color in the blue/green family. Hello, My name is Erin and I am addicted to turquoise. I run a blog called House of Turquoise, where I post all sorts of beautiful rooms in lovely shades of blue. Since I'm not a DIY kind of person, I thought I'd just share with you guys some of my favorite rooms. Not just any rooms, but ones where real people did the work. I have some very talented, creative people that read my blog...check out these inspiring rooms that some of them designed!

Here is one of my favorite laundry rooms, created by Cindy of Cameras and Chaos. Isn't it adorable?? I love the board and batten and the faux roman shade that she made!

I've admired little Wren's room since she was a newborn...her mom Holly of Life in a Fun Lane is a magician when it comes to fixing up old furniture!

This fabulous home belongs to my reader Ali, who lives in Austrailia. She designed the most beautiful home, filled with the bluey/greeny/grey colors I can't get enough of. See more of it here!

Last but not least is the home of Jen Johner...I just adore her entire home. The whole thing is so cheery, welcoming and full of color! See more of it here!

Thanks Judy for letting me pop in and spread some turquoise love while you're away!!
